“I Love My Cat So Much It Hurts,” Me Too; Here’s Why..

I’ve seen a number of people online rant about how much they love their cats, but some will even go so far as to say they love their cats so much it hurts sometimes.

And yes, I’ve gotten this feeling. Quite a lot actually.

It usually has a few different colourations, and I’m going to break down some of the ways that I’ve encountered this kind of overwhelming emotion when it comes to interacting with, or even sometimes just watching my cats.

Honestly it typically catches me unawares.

It happens most when I am distracted and then somehow my focus gets pulled to a kitty, either by him or her jumping into my lap casually or my eye wandering over to where they’re snoozing, then a few moments of happiness over them being with me result in me lost in the feeling.

A cat being hyper cute in the moment definitely triggers this a lot, but so does just thinking about my cat when they are not even present.

Sometimes when I look through my phone pictures, or even when I’m writing in my gratitude journal and the thought pops up, but other times, just in general, I will just think of my cats and feel this.

I’d love it if you took the time to share your thoughts and stories and opinions in the comments down below.

But here’s a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

Why I Often Feel I Love My Cat So Much It Hurts

1. I imagine what life would be like without any one of them, and that’s painful.

I’ve got three old man cat that I love to pieces and if I take a moment to imagine what life would be like without any of them, it kills me a little.

Hence queue the, “I love them so much it hurts…” feeling, where I’m somehow simultaneously thinking of how badly it would hurt to lose them in someway, to death or otherwise.

And simultaneously thinking of how horrible life would have been if they hadn’t come into my life.

Maybe this doesn’t make much sense, maybe it makes all the sense in the world. Who really knows.

2. They are so stinkin’ cute and good and amazing, the feeling becomes overwhelming.

You laugh so hard you cry, you can cry so hard you laugh. You can smile so much it hurts, and find crying cathartic and relieving.

Sometimes our positive emotions get so extreme they blur the lines with our negative emotions. Sometimes the opposite is true.

I feel like any extremes can be just too much for humans to handle sometimes. And the overwhelming love we often feel for our pets can easily get us there. Especially when…

3. You are going through a hard time and your cat’s right there for you the whole way.

Sometimes it feels like we have nothing, or close to nothing, or just not ever enough.

And then there’s our cats, who honestly most of the time are so much better and so much more than we could ever have expected or wanted or hoped for.

A cat breaks you out of a mental funk by jumping in your lap and demanding cuddles, that’s a perfect moment created out of a hopeless, sad moment. That’s crazy.

So yeah, they’re a little magical. And they can help us so much more than we anticipate when we’re going through hard times, even if they are the only ones there.

4. They are uncomplicated positive affection.

Sometimes things in our life can be so complicated that it’s draining mentally and quite daunting.

Nothing is good or bad, nothing is exclusively one thing or the other.

There are things that are more bad than good, things that are more good than bad, but rarely do things ever get to be super overwhelmed most of the time completely good or vice versa.

I honestly feel sometimes like our pets and our relationships with them come close to being that overwhelmingly good a lot of times.

Once you’ve ironed out a lot of the issues, if there were any to begin with… like disturbing your sleep at night by meowing or bringing as second cat in and you finally managing to get them to the point where they get along, you fall into a rhythm with them where these feelings come up a lot more often.

It’s weird, but it’s probably because our relationships with them are often so uncomplicated. We don’t expect much from them.

They just exist to hopefully make us a little more happy. Bring a bit more joy into our lives.

And they do. And we want to care for them, and they return the affection sometimes or do surprising things that make us happy…

Not quite sure how to put a finger on it, but they just feel so uncomplicatedly, unequivocally good.

Your Thoughts on Loving Cat So Much It Hurts?

Why do you feel we sometimes get the feeing that we love our cats so much it hurts?

Do you get this feeling for a particular reason? At a particular time (like watching your furball sit in the sun in their oh-so-easy-breezy life?), or can you pinpoint anything about this feeling that could explain it?

Would love to hear your thoughts and stories if you have a moment to share in the comments below!

Elise’s Favourite Tip

One of the most frustrating problems I’ve had to deal with as a pet parent is staying on top of my cats’ desire to play. While this is typically hard to do, toys like these that allow cats to play by themselves make the job one heck of a lot easier.

The hits in my household are ridiculously affordable: cat springs, ball track toys, & kick sticks. I have a slew scattered around the house, so when my cats get bored, even if I’m busy or not even home, my furries are able to actively play.
