“My Cat Screams When I Shower: Why?!” The Consensus Is…

I’ve seen a number of posts in my days browsing Reddit about how their cats will scream, yell, cry (and for the less dramatic of us) meow at them while they are in the shower.

The general trend seems to continue on far past a few days. It seems like cats that do this do it every time you shower or nearly every time, and it definitely is a common enough behaviour for it to be considered a “cat thing.”

Now, I will say that most cats seem to follow humans into bathrooms. This is probably the most common bathroom-related cat behaviour. That’s not weird (for them, not for us) at all.

Meowing in the bathtub – a bit more common and still not too weird. Literally guarding you while you do a #2, a little more weird, but still quite common. Licking soap – weird and probably uncommon.

But I think yelling at your human while they’re showering probably takes the cake, as 1. The most endearing, 2. The most hilarious, and 3. The most uncommon cat behaviour in the bathroom that I’ve listed so far.

The more common version of this is staring in shock and horror as you are showering. But literally meowing and making a ruckus while you are taking a shower, not so common, I wouldn’t think.

And yet enough cats do this that it is definitely a cat thing.

So what’s that all about?

The general consensus seems to be, in case you haven’t figured it out for yourself….

Your cat is worried for your safety.

They potentially think you are 1. Drowning or 2. Just so stinkin’ uncomfortable because why get wet exactly?? Who wants that in life?

I mean besides my idiot cat Athos who was a stray in our area and used to get soaking wet every time it rained because he was too lazy to move to a dry spot; this is before we took him in…

Why, Athos, whyyy??

Some will joke and say your cat is yelling at you for not knowing how to bathe the correct way – by licking yourself.

Others will observe your cat is basically being a lifeguard on duty. Just ensuring you don’t drown on your endeavour to be a silly human.

Some joke that a cat’s objecting to your having insanely gotten wet on purpose – like a complete lunatic!

But the general consensus is still the same.

How do you get your cat to stop? Looks like some people have had success closing the door so the cat doesn’t visually see you shower and thus isn’t traumatized by your crazy human desire to stand in the “pouring rain” and risk death and drowning to get clean.

But it seems as though some cats never really grow out of this, so unless you close your door each and every time, you might get a good yelling at from your lifeguard kitty.

Good thing someone’s looking out for you. Silly human.

Your Thoughts on Cats Screaming When Humans Shower?

Why do you think some cats scream when humans are in the shower? Do you have any experience with this odd cat behaviour yourself? Something similar?

Would love to hear your thoughts and theories and stories in the comments section down below!

Elise’s Favourite Tip

One of the most frustrating problems I’ve had to deal with as a pet parent is staying on top of my cats’ desire to play. While this is typically hard to do, toys like these that allow cats to play by themselves make the job one heck of a lot easier.

The hits in my household are ridiculously affordable: cat springs, ball track toys, & kick sticks. I have a slew scattered around the house, so when my cats get bored, even if I’m busy or not even home, my furries are able to actively play.
